Before going any further, I would like to show you an example of a case to explain the unusual evolution of social media. We would need to travel back in time many years when the recently arrived conquerors of America took back to Europe a very peculiar plant. This botanical rarity was instantly admired by everyone and placed in homes as a decorative element because of its beauty. Years went on until fierce famine hit the old continent and so they thought that it might be a good idea to eat the tuber of this plant. This historic event is none ohter but the discovery of the potato.

Social media seems to follow a similar pattern. There are a lot of people who use social networks more than decoration or frivolity. Just as the potato plant showed certain social status at its time, it seems like social media is only for big companies.

Nevertheless we are in an economic cycle that needs small and medium sized companies, and entrepreneurs able to boost a market that’s sinking. Famine is back again, can social media make a difference?
